Global Day Of Action against Starbucks...
Grand Rapids Starbucks Union and Sevilla, Spain CNT have announced a Global Day of Action against Starbucks July 5th.Day to protest recent firing of CNT member in Spain and continuing anti-union discrimination in Grand Rapids. The Union of Comerical and Hotel workers CNT-AIT in Sevilla, Spain along with the Grand Rapids Starbucks Workers Union (IWW) have announced a Global Day of Action scheduled for July 5th. The two groups are asking social organizations, unions, and individuals from around the world to promote and participate in this day of action.
On April 24th, 2008 a barista named Monica was fired for her union activity from a Starbucks in Sevilla, Spain. She was a member of the Union of Commercial and Hotel Workers of the Confederacion Nacional de Trabajadores (CNT). Now with the support of all CNT affiliates, the International Workers Association, and the Starbucks Workers Union (IWW) they are demanding justice for Monica.
The treatment of Monica in Spain by Starbucks is similar to the charges of anti-union discrimination being investigated by the National Labor Relations Board in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This new Grand Rapids investigation comes less than a year since Starbucks signed a settlement agreement with the NLRB claiming they would end intimidation against baristas interested in joining the Starbucks Union.
The Grand Rapids Starbucks Workers Union (IWW) calls on everyone interested in social justice and worker's rights to confront global coffee giant Starbucks on July 5th with international solidarity. For Monica in Spain, for baristas in Grand Rapids, and for coffee farmers around the globe.
Grand Rapids Protest:
4 pm July 5th
Starbucks at 28th St. and East Beltline
The CNT of Sevilla have produced a weblog for the Day of Action (in spanish):

Introducing Soviet Union Import JULIA...
.jpg)
Born in the former Soviet Union, Julia is a singer, song-writer and entertainer who views music as a tool for self expression, liberation and high-energy performance. She came to the US as a small child and is a unique talent distinct from her peers of American musicians. Brought up in a communist nation, Julia’s parents worked hard as immigrants to afford her a fortunate life, but she did not grow up in a house influenced by modern, pop music or idealistic beliefs.
She was encouraged to pursue practical ambitions such as academics, a secure career, and love. However, Julia knew the world had more in store for her and she had more in store for the world.
She respected her family’s wishes and attended a prominent University in her home state of Connecticut, but with diploma in-hand Julia was New York City bound and ready to pursue her true passion.
Considering the adversity of her upbringing, Julia firmly believes she was born with an innate connection to music. She began writing songs at the age of 8 and took voice lessons for years. She found herself drawn to the sounds of Michael Jackson, Madonna, Whitney Houston and Prince. While her friends were playing sports after school Julia was home singing and choreographing her own dance routines which would be performed for friends and family.
Over these years, Julia has independently positioned herself as a rising star in New York’s highly competitive grass roots music scene. As an artist Julia is versatile but consistent and has a cross over appeal. Her catchy tunes seem to attract a diverse audience. Her voice is soulful but sweet, pure yet edgy and her presence is captivating.
After working tenaciously in the studio, writing and recording innovative, radio-friendly tracks Julia released a pop album with award-winning music producer, Jordan Lieb and throughout the years has collaborated with other accredited producers who have worked with many highly acclaimed artists. Julia is always working hard creating new music and performing in various well-known New York City venues. Her song “Superstar” has received spins in major clubs throughout New York, Detroit and Connecticut and her recent collaboration with producer Lovell Ramsey landed her a feature on an up and coming Maxi Priest album.
Julia is ready to present the world with all that she is. She knows she was born to sing, entertain and inspire people with her music. She radiates on stage and is undeniably a superstar!

STEVE BACK SAFE..
Steve Gooch
Dear Friends,
Steve just landed safely at Heathrow Airport in London, England.
He had an interesting last couple of days in Khartoum, Sudan. Steve decided to take advantage of the relative quiet to continue the research on his upcoming book about Mahmoud Mohammed Taha, the Ghandi of Islam. He had to travel through Omdurman where the JEM attacked last Saturday. From Steve: "tanks still all over the place, heavy artillery everywhere, special forces soldiers everywhere, burned out trucks everywhere...."
If you have not read his account of being in the middle of the attack on the city, please visit:
The Voice of Humanity Healing Blog
Thank you all for keeping Steve in your thoughts and prayers until he could safely leave Khartoum. Please continue to keep the people of Khartoum in your thoughts and prayers.
Much Metta,

Unfair Labor Practices Settlement With Starbucks...
NLRB Decision in Starbucks Election Petition
Unfair Labor Practices Settlement With Starbucks
The IWW Starbucks Workers Union won a watershed victory over unfair labor practices in a conflict between the world's largest coffee chain and the baristas who work there. Faced with the prospect of having its widespread union-busting campaign exposed in a public hearing, Starbucks agreed to remedy all of the myriad violations committed against workers who have organized a union.
Some highlights of the National Labor Relations Board settlement with Starbucks include:
The reinstatement of IWW members, Sarah Bender and Anthony Polanco, who had been discharged for their union activity in order to discourage other workers from making a free and fair choice about whether to join the union.
The invalidation of Starbucks' national policy that prohibited the sharing of written union information and joining the union on company property.
The invalidation of Starbucks' national no-pin policy. Workers had been banned from wearing IWW pins and had been sent home from work without pay for refusing to take them off.
An agreement by Starbucks to end threats, bribes, and surveillance of union members.
What would have been a relatively hefty backpay award against Starbucks was reduced because the IWW assisted its discharged members in obtaining other employment which mitigates damages under the National Labor Relations Act. Still, the company will pay out almost $2,000.

In New York City, you are invited to join baristas andsupporters for a colorful and lively protest at thenew $24.7 million mansion of Starbucks CEO HowardSchultz.
A STARBUCKS BARISTA WOULD HAVE TO WORK OVER 350 YEARS STRAIGHT WITHOUT SLEEPING TO PURCHASE SCHULTZ'SMANSION!

Despite the union-busting, Starbucks workers aroundthe country continue to join the union at a robustpace and win important improvements on the job.
